As some of you will recall, I'm on the hunt for stickers - geeky or otherwise. In my original post, I decided I needed:
1. A Zune sticker, so that I can try to explain WTF 'Welcome to the Social' actually means. 2. A Starbucks logo sticker. Non-negotiable. 3. Any other cool stickers you can think of that relate to Mac-geekery. 4. A relatively small John C. Dvorak 'I Get No Spam' sticker. C'mon TWiTs! Where are they?! 5. Aston Martin sticker.
As you can see from the strikethrough above, I've not done that well. A measly 20% success in fact. However, that doesn't stop me from having plenty of stickers ready for the laptop:
So not a bad start. I've got a US Customs Sticker (hopefully) sorted, and I'm trying to source a 'Highly Explosive' warning sticker too. To top it all off, I've literally just sent off form some Feedburner stickery goodness too, so come Christmas I *might* have something worth showing to you all! Tomorrow sees Apple UK's 'Black Friday' sale - and whilst I doubt there'll any 17" MacBookPro reductions, I'll be checking out what they're cutting prices on. (Any excuse to visit the Apple Store).
Fake Steve: A frankly hilarious post today (although I can't help but feel that comments about Heather Mills are a little harsh). Worth a read for a light take on the supposed Apple + Beatles collaboration coming 'soon':
"You cannot believe the crap we are going through to make this Beatles licensing deal work out. EMI desperately wants the deal to happen too, so they leaked the story to our good pals at Fortune (much love, Brent) so they could crank up the pressure on the Apple dudes.[...]
The real hassle of course is Yoko. Sheesh. Don't even get me started.[...]
Finally I just snapped and I'm like, "Jesus friggin Christ, bitch, it's bad enough you broke up the greatest band of all time. Now you're gonna frig this up too? Jesus, lady! Get a friggin grip! It's just a distribution deal!" She bows her head and says, in this voice that's barely more than a whisper, "I will pray for your soul." Well that did it. I won't get into details -- my lawyers won't allow it -- but let's just say that Yoko had to wear sunglasses in public for a few days, and Peter Oppenheimer had to drag me out of there by my ankles."
Apple West Quay - If anyone has an information as to the opening date of the store please get in touch! I'm trying to plan a visit to Southampton to coincide with the opening and would much appreciate any advanced notice!
Now that I'm running with the very excellent Nike + iPod Kit, I thought I'd share a couple of tunes that I find are great running tunes, or maybe just a tune that I'm loving at the moment. The links below areiTunes affiliates links - if you choose to click and go to the store, I will receive 4% of sales (all of which goes to pay the bandwidth bills!).
John Legend: Ordinary People (+ Music Video) - Perhaps not the greatest tune to run to, but a favourite of mine since I discovered John Legend after watching his performance at the Apple 'It's Showtime' event.
Chris Cornell: You Know My Name (from Casino Royale) - Easily the best tune to run to at the moment. A brilliant song (what a change of mind!) that I've really grown to love since seeing Casino Royale for a second time!
Of course, you can always see what I'm listening to via my last.fm profile!
Today I received a rather interesting Flickr-mail, from someone wishing to use a photo or two of mine in a news story on NowPublic.com (FWIW I've never heard of the site either!). Seems that someone took a shine to the iKaraoke that I snapped at Apple Expo Paris, and in fact chatted to Griffin Technology about on Northern Bytes. If I could choose which photos were used in any news story, these wouldn't be the two, but thanks for choosing them NowPublic!
I ought to add that my rant here assumes that the licence for Cha-ching in MacHeist is good for all future versions as it appears that they're giving away a licence for an app the developers have public stated will give you 'free updates for life'. How can they expect to charge the small number of people who don't find the app in MacHeist when they've literally given away twenty four THOUSAND licences asssuming everyone completes their heist this week? There's been a huge debate on the value of Zots and Software Pricing, so maybe read the following before my post below!
As someone who enjoys a bit of fun, MacHeist seemed like the ideal thing to kill time with. Sadly, it's a bit lame really - and it is, to me, the epitome of everything the so-called 'Delicious Generation' is about. My frustration, it has to be said, is with one app in particular - Cha-ching, that is part of this weeks heist.. It's a beta (quick - run for cover before John Gruber finds out about it 'coz he'll say more than I will ;-) ), and yet they're touting it as an app with a $14.95 value in MacHeist? C'mon, that's just lame. I don't expect to play heists to be rewarded with a piece of beta software. And one that refuses to take my supplied serial number and actually run at that.
I came across a post today dating back from October titled 'Why Cha-Ching is everything wrong with Mac software'. Well worth a read. Some of it may be inflammatory, but every single point rings true with me. In this case, here is what pisses me off the most. It's mainly brought on by MacHeist's pushing of Cha-Ching as a $15 product:
Saying that we're being given an app with a $14.95 value is complete BS. We're being given a beta which we're meant to stick with until it gets to v1.0 before we can actually begin to use it. I won't be. As the article above states, you shouldn't have to pay for beta software. Set and expire date by all means (most of the software I've beta-tested has been) - just don't expect people to pay for it whilst in beta.
24,000 licences are going to be simply given away. This makes the $14.95 value absolutely worthless. It's effectively freeware (to get access to a serial number you simply need to use a code given on the MacHeist forums to unlock your own code). OK, you have to register NOW to get on board with the heist and in return get the code, but still. In fact, if you actually paid for Cha-ching (fools) the only thing that would piss you off more is if it were now declared freeware yet your money not returned.
Look at the screenshot below. All it makes me think is: "How are they going to pay the bills and put one of them in college if they aren't actually receiving money from the app?"
If I'm being overly harsh, then please leave me a comment and point out the error of my ways. I'll more than happily respond!
As my second anniversary as a full time Mac user approaches, I talk about my experiences to date. Today's post is more about my reasons for switching, and my background with computers before I took the plunge.
Some of you know that I work in a Cafe when not studying - geeks need money! However the other week, as I spent my time replenishing the crisps, I noticed a very worrying thing. Every single pack of Walkers crisps stocked at the cafe is 'Suitable for Vegetarians'. Even the Roast Chicken, Roast Steak and more. Bizarre. It actually put me off buying any myself. Hence why I'm sat here typing in the bar with a pack of Sensations (Roasted Chicken, Lemon and Thyme) that are most certainly not suitable for vegetarians!
Today saw me hike the half mile into Manchester for the Christmas Market that has truly kicked off! It's sprawling. Of course, food was on the top of the list (although we had to stop for an obligatory Starbucks halfway too. Such is life!). With the decorations up in Manchester, you could have been convinced that December was already upon us. It was bitterly cold, but thankfully I took my camera to snap the town and with the wheel being back in Exchange Square (just along from the Apple Store which also had the obligatory visit) we really had fun. Check out the photos below, and the rest of them in the Flickr Slideshow here!
On Flickr, I've started to document my stickering of the iBook that will eventually be replaced by a shiny new MacBookPro. However, I'm in need of some specific stickers:
1. A Zune sticker, so that I can try to explain WTF 'Welcome to the Social' actually means. (Note, this may not end up on the laptop, but I think it would be a nice coloured logo to sit on an iBook!) 2. A Starbucks logo sticker. Non-negotiable. Update: Potentially Sorted 3. Any other cool stickers you can think of that relate to Mac-geekery. 4. A relatively small John C. Dvorak 'I Get No Spam' sticker. C'mon TWiTs! Where are they?! 5. Aston Martin sticker.
Prizes of linkage to your site if you point me in the right direction (i.e. an eBay listing) or my ever-lasting gratitude for anyone who actually contacts me, and as a result sends a sticker. Of course, anyone whose sticker makes it onto the laptop can expect muchos Flickr shots of their wares!
* Specifics: As far as possible, I want stickers that have transparent borders (no white borders please!) so that they can overlap in style.
I KNOW I've talked about Casino Royale rather a lot recently, but after having just seen it, I'm going to tell you one thing: You will want to see the film. I've put together a little review, as much as possible trying to avoid spoilers, but just so people don't get annoyed if something inadvertantly ruins the experience, I've put the article itself on the site, but not the RSS. I know this may annoy people, but I don't want to ruin such a great movie.
I'm a big fan of James Bond films (maybe not the greatest thing to admit to I know) and tomorrow sees the release of the latest in the series. I've talk about Casino Royale a couple of times before (trying not to get annoyed over the small fact that the iTunes release is US only!), however I'm now going to explain some of the reasons I love the Bond films. Firstly, there's the cars. Yes, the cars. Aston Martin all the way! Secondly, the locations (apart from Die Another Day which was frankly a pile of ****). The sets are amazing, even if the story is a little out of this world. Thirdly, and perhaps the most important yet ironic reason, is the music. If the Bond films are famous for one thing, it's the titles sequence and the music used for it. So here's my question in a simple attempt to stimulate some blogger-reader interaction: Which is your favourite Bond song? Whilst you try and decide, here's a little trailer for tomorrow courtesy of Sony Pictures and the ever-indispensible YouTube:
My personal favourite is Carly Simon 'Nobody Does It Better' from The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), but that's not to say the rest aren't brilliant. McCartney/Wings, Sheryl Crow, Tina Turner and Garbage, along with a-Ha are some greats.
Seems that there's a few changes to the England Rugby Union side that was completely humiliated and battered by Argentina last Saturday - too bad the one change we all want isn't happening......
W00T! We be having true mapping for Blighty Flickrers! Rejoice! Rejoice! Oh Why thank you Flickr! *Runs off to renew Pro account* This just shows how bad the maps were before.... That 'lots' ought to be over 'Picadilly Gardens'.
Yesterday I posted my desktop to Flickr. Hardly a ground-breaking thing nowadays, but what I didn't expect was all the question over one app in my dock.... The app in question is the one on the very right of the Application area in the above photo (clicking it will open the image in Lightbox at a larger size). If you want to find out more about it, then it's called KIT (Keep It Together) and is from British developer Reinvented Software. It's a handy little app that er Keeps It Together!
Want an invite to MacHeist? I've got 5 to give out to anyone who leaves a comment on this post. Please ensure you enter an email address when doing so (it will not be displayed but will be visible in my control panel) otherwise I'll be unable to offer you an invite!
Love him or loathe him, the Borat movie is just too funny. It might offend people at times, but I didn't stop laughing. Go. See. Now. I would offer some more insightful commentary, but I would spoil some of the funniest moments and you just wouldn't enjoy it as much..... Some of the moments are just classic (Borat + Ice Cream Van + Wild Bear + Children = *Laughter*!), some are just painful, others you just cringe, but you simply will not stop laughing. Hell, come the end of it, when Borat finally does something he failed to do throughout a portion of the film, you just think *thank &^$%^£*. It's a great watch, and well worth the money!
I have a great love for Soundtracks from Movies. I own far too many of them, and that trend is set to continue (although in my opinion Gladiator will remain the greatest soundtrack ever. Period). I had in fact, pre-ordered the David Arnold score for Casino Royale on Amazon, however this news about an exclusive extra super special iTunes special made me run over to Amazon and cancel the order. I'm torn however, as I love physical CDs, between whether I ought to get the CD or not.... Hmm. Decisions. There's also the small matter of it being a DRM-laden release - something I've become rather intolerant of recently. We'll see. We'll see.
In other, mildly music-related news, it appears that Microsoft has finally got the labels on board (albeit through bribing Universal $1 a Zune) with Zune which comes out the same day as the iTunes Casino Royale release (14th November). I can't help but wonder what this means for Apple (who are apparently re-negotiating with Universal for iTS next year), and whether Cupertino will be firing a salvo on Tuesday to steal the Zune's thunder or burn. As ever, John Gruber's got a valid reader comment that made me chuckle.
I'm off to see Borat tonight, after having pointed out to Susan that the Borat site is almost as bad as the example in her recent post. Mini-critique coming soon. The random photo? Oh that's looking towards the cinema from my kitchen window!
Whether you've visited NikFletcher.com for ages, or are a relatively new visitor, feel free to add yourself to the rather cool Frappr map to show where in the world you're visiting from!
I haven't really been following the US Mid-term Elections too closely today (although I've caught up on it just now). However this article on BoingBoing is too good not to share.
Firstly, apologies for the brief message. You're interfering with my 24: Series 5 catchup. I'm only half kidding there I'm afraid!
Firstly, a BIG shout for a Flickr group or two that 'became' today thanks to some mad commenting and Gmail-ing (quite why it wasn't done over IM I don't know!). Firstly, the 'I Love My Mighty Mouse' group. Most people hate their Mighty Mouse, but I don't, and neither does Susan, so let's get this thing going and say I <3 My Mighty Mouse!
Secondly is a far bigger group: Apple Peer Pressure Group. Description: "This is where you show off your Apple purchases and get to blame the people who made you do it. The idea is you upload a photo of your Apple Geekery and add a small photo from your Peer you felt Pressured by in the comments. Have a look at a couple of photos in the pool to get the idea. Photos without "backward" links will be deleted! Please put them in the description area!" So far, it's just myself, Susan and (geek-cred here) David Chartier from TUAW.com who've posted, but go on. Run over there and join and post! Now!
In my forthcoming reminisce on my two years of Mac ownership, I'll be looking back at the apps that changed my computer usage and those that make me love my Mac. One app that re-invigorated my love of web design was RapidWeaver. Through RapidWeaver I came across a new concept (something that I'd merely heard spoken about on Windows) - CSS. What software for Mac is there that does CSS? Well, there's StyleMaster (a good cross platform program that is very good from what I hear) but there's also CSSEdit from MacRabbit. Version 1.7.x was brilliant, however now that CSSEdit 2.0 is out, you need to go check it out!
This is just a truly hilarious interview with the genius behind Ali G and Borat... enjoy it (unless Viacom takes it offline first!). Warning: It will have you in fits of laughter!
Background: When it comes to hardware, I'm not what's known as an early adopter. In fact, the only time I've ever rushed out and bought something new was, er, my Nokia 6280 and perhaps my Red Nano. Generally I don't go for the latest hardware as soon as it arrives (that will probably change come January though!) - mainly because I'm not someone with enough money to splurge on things like that. But when new software comes along, I'm normally the first to run out and get it (iLife 06 being an example). Hell, I routinely use pre-release software for mission critical projects! So when iTunes 7 came along, within minutes of it being announced, I downloaded it via a generous Parisian's WiFi (hey, if they aren't going to password protect it, I consider it fair game) and installed it. Hmmmm. It looked a bit weird, my shortcuts were missing, and I just wasn't convinced. So many other people have moaned about iTunes 7 that it may seem like I'm flogging an already-dead horse, but I'm going to make some observations now that I've used it in it's entirety after some iPod installations etc. The Good
The idea of the iPod interface. Long overdue, and in principle a very good idea.
Video performance is far better
Controls for video are slick and make it more of a Front Row experience
Downloads - Be it a podcast, iTS purchase or software update for your iPod, there's an integrated download manager that is a neat touch.
iPod installation rocks. Include the integrated registration, it's a great idea just like the iPod interface in general.
The Bad
Where's the Aqua
Where's the Mac-like UI
Oh, where's the Aqua
The UI's as dull as.....
WHY is so much space wasted in the iPod interface?
Why is iTS too wide for my 12" display?
Exhibits A-Z:
This is good. I like visualised iPod in the source field - makes it easy to work with multiple iPods
Whilst I'm not a fan of this UI (a bit dull!), it works so ultimately I can't be too disappointed. (Yes, I was in a mood when setting up a smart playlist for the Shuffle this afternoon!)
These just suck. Period. Good idea. Piss poor implementation - it looks like something out of the Windows Networking Control Panel setup!
This is unnecessary. Just so unnecessary. I know what my freaking iPod looks like and I don't need a pretty little CG rendering of it inside iTunes.
I bet the Apple engineers sat down and thought 'How much screen space can we waste here?'
Whilst I don't like aspects of iTunes 7, the improvements in video (especially given the age of my iBook G4) and the options for iPod management will probably keep me satisfied at least for a while!
As part of Northern Bytes we're starting to look at RSS readers (new episode coming this weekend!). I've long been a fan of ThinkMac Software's products (and they're a U.K. developer to boot) so when news of a new RSS reader came about, I was intrigued. Details are now starting to come out, and based on the screen shot in today's blog post, I'm really excited! This is one product I cannot wait to get my mits on!
I'm glad about this - I've always maintained that we should wait and see about Casino Royale and the first Daniel Craig 007 movie. Now the critics love it, I cannot wait to see Casino Royale!
I like birthday presents. But unexpected ones are neat too, so when meeting up with my mate Paul today (at the Apple Store of all places!) it was a complete suprise to be handed a new iPod shuffle as a belated birthday gift (especially as they only arrived in stores this morning)!
(L) iPod Shuffle in New Packaging (R) The Rear of the Player
First Impressions:
It's tiny. Absolutely tiny. It absolutely epitomisises Apple's brilliant industrial design - for example whilst the actual iPod goes into the (included! woo!) dock upside down, Apple have put the status LED on both the bottom and top of the player so you can see the status whichever way the player is inverted:
(L) Top of Shuffle (Status LED on Left) (R) Bottom of Shuffle (Status LED on Right)
And the FCC certificates and Serial number are conveniently hidden behind the clip. It really is light - so light you could forget you're wearing it - for what it's worth, I've laid down a bet it will be a week before it in advertantly goes though the washing machine! The clip, whilst not being the strongest will likely hold the shuffle in most situations (it's so light a heavy clip is hardly needed!) but running, I'm not sure whether I'd trust it entirely.... we'll see about that.
As people may be aware, I like the idea of docks for iPods - it keeps it safe and also ensures you know where the iPod is! Thanks to the abnormal method of charging and sync-ing the new shuffle (through a channel on the headphone jack!) Apple has bundled a dock. Whilst people don't like the lost ability to use it as a USB pen drive as a result of this re-design, I'm not fussed as the old shuffle was too wide for a single USB port on my iBook anyway.
The Wow Factor
In the brief time between returning from the Apple store and going to a concert at the college (Dvorak Carnival Overture, Strauss Oboe Concerto, Mahler's Kindertotenlieder & Janacek Sinfonietta) I showed the new Shuffle to about a dozen people. After the initial "What is that?!" people were just amazed by it. In fact, of the dozen or so people who I showed it to, at least half of them wanted one for Christmas (and one of my flat mates has asked me to see if she can transfer her music into iTunes 'just in case she decides to get one' from SonicStage) and people were describing the Shuffle's size as "just ridiculous". It seems fair to say that Apple has scored yet another home-run with the Shuffle. At £55 it's going to be a very tempting Christmas present for children, adults and students alike. I just hope Apple has enough inventory to see them through the holiday season!
Update: One thing that escaped my memory was the new 'Hold' feature that is rather clever. Basically, if you want to put the player on hold whilst music is playing, you hold the play / pause button for 3 seconds and it then locks the buttons. Neat. Another press for 3 seconds unlocks the buttons. The power button on the bottom is a really welcome addition (is this the first iPod to had a dedicated power button?!).
This evening I went with a flat mate to see Chicago (which is only in Manchester until Saturday). It rocked. Seriously, it rocked. The music, the staging, the dancing, the acting, hell the venue, it all rocked. Until I went to buy some Smarties at the interval. Smarties are were renowned for their bright colours. Not any more are they bright coloured. The blue ones are gone, the greens no longer bright green, and the brown ones, well, I'll simply say I've seen brighter coloured rabbit droppings..... Perhaps one too many kids got a bit hyper on the blue ones, or more likely the EU decided that they were not *supposed* to look like they did, and so now we're stuck with inferior ones. Boo. Blue Smarties, like Mountain Dew, look like they're not going to be hitting our shores again, and whilst dentist and parents might rejoice, I'm just sad to see them leave.
Well it appears someone at Apple was reading my post about iTunes 7 pet hates! There's new shortcuts in the menu to enable people to toggle the window (photo right). Plus, the iPod Nano (Product) RED Special Edition now appears as a red iPod in both the source and iPod view. A nice touch from Apple there.
In other news, my pouch for the Nike + iPod tab arrived from the USA! Now I've got it attached to my (cheap!) trainers, I can track my running (or as Apple likes to say 'Tune Your Run').
